ESSENCE: semaglutide improved liver histology in fatty liver with inflammation
Phase 3 in 1,197 people with metabolic steatohepatitis and moderate or advanced fibrosis confirmed by biopsy.
ESSENCE is a phase 3, double-blind trial in people with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and stage 2 or 3 fibrosis confirmed by biopsy. They were assigned 2:1 to weekly semaglutide or placebo.
Both primary endpoints — resolution of steatohepatitis without worsening fibrosis, and improvement in fibrosis without worsening steatohepatitis — favoured semaglutide. Later analyses saw improvements across all levels of weight loss.
In three points
- Phase 3 trial with 1,197 participants and liver biopsy
- Liver inflammation and fibrosis improved
- Improvements appeared across different degrees of weight loss
