MOTS-c, the peptide exercise produces, improved physical capacity in old mice
In Nature Communications: treatment started late in life increased physical capacity in old mice.
MOTS-c is a peptide encoded in the mitochondria's own DNA. In this work, giving it improved physical performance in young, middle-aged and old mice, and intermittent treatment started at an advanced age increased their physical capacity.
The authors also found that in people exercise raises MOTS-c in muscle and blood. The efficacy results are in animals and need confirmation in humans.
In three points
- Mouse study, with measurements also in people
- More physical capacity even when started in old age
- Exercise raises the body's own MOTS-c in humans
Original source: MOTS-c is an exercise-induced mitochondrial-encoded regulator of age-dependent physical decline and muscle homeostasis
