Sleep apnoea: tirzepatide reduced night-time breathing pauses
Two phase 3 trials in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity.
SURMOUNT-OSA combined two phase 3, double-blind trials in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity. The main measure was the apnoea–hypopnoea index: how many breathing pauses occur per hour of sleep.
After 52 weeks, tirzepatide reduced that index more than placebo in both trials. An editorial in the same journal described it as the start of a new era in sleep-apnoea treatment.
In three points
- Two phase 3 human trials, 52 weeks
- Fewer breathing pauses per hour of sleep
- Improvement also linked to weight loss
