SURMOUNT-1: tirzepatide achieved substantial, sustained weight reductions
A 72-week trial in people with obesity testing three weekly doses against placebo.
Tirzepatide acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. In SURMOUNT-1, adults with obesity or overweight with comorbidities, without diabetes, received 5, 10 or 15 mg weekly or placebo for 72 weeks.
All three doses produced substantial and sustained weight reductions versus placebo, larger at higher doses. The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal, mostly mild or moderate.
In three points
- Phase 3 human trial, 72 weeks
- Substantial weight loss at all three doses
- First dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist tested this way in obesity
