Tesamorelin reduced liver fat and halted fibrosis in people with HIV
A 12-month randomised trial of the GHRH analogue in HIV-associated fatty liver.
Tesamorelin is an analogue of growth-hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). In this double-blind, multicentre trial, 61 people with HIV and fatty liver received daily tesamorelin or placebo for 12 months.
Tesamorelin reduced liver fat and prevented fibrosis progression over the year. The authors described it as the first effective strategy against fatty liver in this population, and called for longer studies to confirm the effect on histology.
In three points
- Human trial in people with HIV, 12 months, double-blind
- Less liver fat and no fibrosis progression
- GHRH analogue of the growth-hormone axis
